Like so many other New Orleans evacuees, we were part of the group living in Mississippi. Our home, East New Orleans, was not accessible until 17 days post-Katrina, and then only with a letter of admission from our public official friend. During our trip back home, one of our stranded pet cats bit me on my finger which turned into a staph infection, and subsequently a five day stay at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I would also like to thank the people at Southern Bone and Joint Center for their help as well.
We moved back to New Orleans December 17, 2005-lived in a recently purchased trailer and generated electric power for thirty more days, post-Katrina. About our “rescue”:We met a nurse at Forrest General who said her stepfather and mom were members of Goodwater Baptist Church and they may be able to help us with some clean-up help. Some help it was: six giant (football player size) men came to where we were camping, Mimosa Landing in Columbia, MS and followed us to our severely flood damaged property in New Orleans.
These men did a mammoth job of removing refrigerators, freezers, stoves and other heavy items and placed them on the street curb for the sanitation department to pick up-eventually.
God bless the nurse at Forrest General, the pastor, Pastor Barker, and all of his associates. I will pray for and never forget them.
We are almost back to "normal" and I hope to pay a visit to them soon. It may seem like a long time to recover from a flood, but it was no normal flood.
I thank the Baptist people from my entire being, my soul. We are Catholics and have so much respect for the Baptist people.
We purchased a home/barn in Columbia, Mississippi, at #8 Air Port Rd. and hope to live there one day -soon.
Thank you, the nurse, at Forrest General. God bless you too.
Sincerely,
Richard Schmidt and Family
